David Scarff - Solihull 41 Club

David Scarff – 10 May 1937 – 24 November 2020

President of Solihull RT in 1980 and Solihull 41 Club Chairman in 2005

David’s Father was in the timber business and before David set up his own business, he spent a year in Finland learning about the Timber Trade. After which he joined Rudders & Paynes and other firms before starting out on his own. He was President of the Midland’s Region Timber Trade Association in 1991 and a committee member of it for many years.

Immediately after leaving school and before going to Finland, David did his National Service. He joined the Royal Artillery reaching the rank of Captain, and, during his service learned to drive a tank.

David played rugby for many years and met his wife, Liz at the Old Silhillians Club. However, he is much better known for his Golf and was Captain of Olton Golf Club in 1994. In 1979 he became the founder of a Golfing group known as the Commander’s Eightsome (He, of course, was the Commander) and every year since The Eight have gone away for a long weekend of golf to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and even France. He was over the moon when he won the Eightsome’s coveted trophy in 1997 in the Trossachs and again in 2000 at Ballyliffin, Northern Ireland. Sadly 2010 was his last year with the Commanders but each year, without fail, the remaining members toast their dear friend.

David was a keen Tabler attending four National Conferences with many other Solihull Round Tablers. He was extremely pleased to be invited to become Table President in 1980. After Table he became a regular member at 41 Club becoming Chairman in 2005.

David was a gigantic character and will be sadly missed by all who knew him and especially by his wife Liz, their two daughters Melanie and Fiona & grandchildren, Bradley, Sophie, Ben and Emily.
