Melvyn Hancock - Wellington 41 Club

Wellington 41 Club is sad to announce the passing of Melvyn Hancock who died at the age of 84 on 16 March 2014.

Melvyn joined Wellington 41 Club in 1970, eight days after his 40th birthday, from Wellington (Somerset) Round Table. He was the Club Chairman (and Secretary!) in 1977.

Melvyn was born in Wellington during a terrific storm on 6th January 1930. One of his first passionate interests was the Boy Scout Movement. He joined in 1941 and in 1944 was made the first King Scout in Somerset. He enjoyed his time in Scouts, earning many badges and learning to cook sausages (the only cooking he ever did in his entire life). He also learnt semaphore flag signalling which was one of his many party pieces.

Melvyn started work for the Urban District Council (UDC) in Wellington as a general office boy which included collecting rents on his bicycle – many a tale he could tell you about this! After completing his National Service he continued to work for the UDC and worked his way up to the position of Chief Financial Officer. When the UDC merged with Taunton Deane Melvyn was promoted to Chief Assistant Revenue Officer. He retired in 1990.

Melvyn married Jean on 14th April, 1952. Over the following years they were blessed with three children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

As well as being a devoted family man Melvyn had many interests. He was a passionate golfer, however in recent years his ill health forced him to retire from playing but continued to follow and watch golf on television. Melvyn also enjoyed watching football. He supported local clubs Wellington, Yeovil and Exeter introducing his grandsons to football and taking them to watch many matches. He was an active member of Round Table, 41 Club and Rotary – only leaving Rotary within the last couple of years as his health declined. He was very proud to become a ‘Paul Harris Fellow’ during his time in Rotary. An award presented for outstanding service to Rotary and the community.

We are all saddened by his passing but proud to have known him as a good friend and respected member of 41 Club. Melvyn is survived by his widow Jean and children Jane, Andrew and Sally, to whom we offer our sincere condolences.
