Charles Winter-Taylor - Wycombe 41 Club

Charles Marcel Winter-Taylor

1924 - 2017

High Wycombe 41 Club regret to announce the recent death of Charles Winter-Taylor after a long illness.

Charles was born in High Wycombe, Bucks, the son of local solicitor William Winter-Taylor, and educated at William Borlase Grammar School in Marlow Bucks.

He left school in 1941 and volunteered for the Royal Navy, serving on aircraft carriers in the Middle and Far East war zones, and finishing in Japan at the Japanese surrender.

Following his demob, Charles studied Law, qualifying as a solicitor and becoming a junior partner in the family firm.

Once in practice Charles joined High Wycombe Round Table, becoming Chairman in 1957. He was a great supporter of the club, organising many fun events including the Wycombe Show, donkey derby, bed races and the annual firework display helping to raise many thousands of pounds for various charitable causes. In 1976 he was invited to return to the Club to become its Honorary President.

Wycombe 41 Club was formed in 1966 and Charles was the Founder Chairman, becoming Chairman again the following year and then for a third in 1996. He was one of only two Honorary Life members of the Club though sadly illness prevented him attending the Club’s 50th Charter in 2016.

His professional career as a solicitor brought Charles many friends and he also held a variety of positions in High Wycombe: Deputy Coroner, President of the Catenian Society, President of the Bucks, Berks and Oxon Law Society, and Chairman of the Bucks Housing Association. He retired as Senior Partner of the family practice in 1990.

In his spare time Charles was an avid sports supporter, actively involved with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, Wycombe Cricket Club and Flackwell Heath Golf Club.

In 1971 he bought a smallholding in nearby Hughenden Valley where he bred beef cattle.

In 1950 Charles married Jean (Molly) Jack who became an active Ladies Circler and Tangent member and pre-deceased him. They had 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
